Protect yourselves from Phnom Penh dust

Q: why people cover their nose and face?

A: "well! because Phnom Penh makes me feel i need it evey time i go out door. I inhale large amount of flying dust everyday. Without mark, I feel very hard to breath! there is no clean air. They do not care about cleaning the street".

Q: Why do you think Phnom Penh municipality don't care about washing the street? is it because they do not have the washing truck or machine?

A: "NO. I think they don't want to wash the road because if the street are cleaned it would make it too slippery for traveller to walk or ride motobike. This would cause fruther traffick accidents!". Laugh.... laugh....

Q: Anything more you wanna add?

A: "Err well, one more thing is that: If Phnom Penh municipality wash the raod, they will have to spray lot of water. This can cause the dirt and the soil to flow into the drainage system that would further cause flood on the street...(laugh). They fear that people would blame them for making the street flood!. That is why they don't care about washing the street. I thnik they wanna see flying dust, becuase for them it is a kind of a beautiful looking thing. They might want keep the dirt so Phnom Penh would look like Europe under fog when the wind blow!"

Q: what do you think truely about dust in Phnom Penh?

A: "God! very bad. I feel somebody blow dirt on me when i take a ride. I have to use mark to protect myslef, otherwise my lung would be riuned!"

Q: do you think Phnom Penh is clean city, because authority say they make new garden?

A: "Oh that is only a few place. you can still see trash on the garden. BUT most place is dirty and dusty. No place to relax or walk. I can't imagine a city witout a place to walk!"

Q: but the road is mostly paved?

A: "So what? Most roads have never been washed clean at all! only a few people brush it and you can see dust is flying into the nose of travellers. Why not wash and clean the road at night?. Such a lazy city!".

Q: And the municipality say Phnom Penh is beautiful?

A: "I would say Phnom Penh is the disorganised city, the only city where strrets have no sidewalk or with dirty sidewalk, full of gargage, digging, soil in the side of the street, flying dust, hot and not inviting, not attractive, boring place, very dark at night. In brief i would say it is just like a country side town!".

Q: why you are so negative about this? There are more clearn places in Phnom Penh?

A: "Well, as i can see there are only two or tree gardens in the whole city where about 2 millions people are living. It is just a tiny result. There is no large-scale project. They just a piece of work and then become too proud of themselves. this is what i can see. i don't know if i am negative".

Disorganised city>>>disoorganised wedding!

Makeshif built on the road during the wedding, blocking traffick and make people vulneable to accidents. Phnom Penh still allow this kind of thing happened on the street althoug the volum of traffick is increasing. This habit was pratice for years but no new solution is arranged. A sleepy Phnom Penh!

CAMBODIA, a country that proudly promote drinking

Cambodian TV advertising is nothing rather than alcoholic. It cheats people. Many country banned advertising of alcohol and destroy it (see photo), but Cambodia is proudly promoting it! People are poisioned by these alcohol companies who damage the health of poor people. Is the ministry of information is responsible for those advertising? i have no idea!

Traditional Apsara dance have been exploited in many ways

Apsara dance should be performced only on the stage where there is good preparation of light with furnished and decorated stage. It should not be perfomed under the stage and on the ground in the middle of sunlight as it is usually done during some government's inauguration ceremonies There is no sense of art in such performance. It is just a exploitation of the art.

The value of art is combined with beauty. Without beauty and attraction, there is no art.

At any bus stop, you can see this!

CAMBODIA'S TRASH MANAGEMEMT: At any bus stops along national highway, you can easily
find pile of garbage. In one of the popular bus stop called Chamka Svay Chanty or "cashewnut plantation" you don't need to work hard to find trash littering along side of the raod. A big eyesore! There seem to be no one is taking care of the matter, everyone know how to dispose of the trash arbitrarily on the side of the road. Plastic bag is flying around and the wind blow it far from the bus stop. Let see it in the picture on lelf. Trash on the highway is just a tip of the iceburge! (below is pile of garbage on river front park in Phnom Penh. Trash can also be easily found at the beach near seasport in Sihanukvile. and the smell is......undescribable!)

Siem Reap river-another source of the city's attraction

The river in the heart of Siem Reap city is one of the best peaceful place for relaxing, spoting. It is a source of the city's beautify and honor. And it can also be the potential for the goverment to make some buck if the river is used as a water route for tourist who which to raw boad to see Angkorwat?

This can be done if the river bank is expended just a bit; grass and walking terrain along both sides of the river is paved up to the Angkorwat entrance, allowing people and tourists to enjoy sightseeing, walking and breething. Money can be made if a well-mamanged rawing boat agency provide service to tourist in a safe, convenient, friendly, professional manner, and fairly affordable cost by seriously respecting the environmental regulation.

Siem Reap - a famous city with dirty sidewalk

"I have no choice but to walk on the street, then a car play horn at me. I was really frustrated!", a common complaint from tousrists.

Siem Reap is a well-known among Cambodians, perhalp among foreign tourists too, that it is a center of cultural heritage of the Kingdom. It is true. but now look at how this city is managing its environment. Along the street, you can see unpaved sidewalk fillied with dirt and mud. In some place people park their cars, keep their machinary or even pour dirty water on the road! Here are some comments from people i met, both Khmer and foreign toursits:

"I walk around and dust and dirt is flying around is everywhere". "There is no proper sidewalk. Some pedestrain have to walk on the street". "Trash and plastic bag and bottle can be seen almost everywhere including in the garden in front of the royal palace". "The sidewalk is dirty and not evenly paved. Tourists have to manuvor around to find smooth place to walk. If they are not becareful enough, they would fall".
